When you get that text.

I know this kid that my brothers grew up with, his family were our neighbors. He was the gangly kid that I thought would end up doing something stupid and ruining his life. His home life was rough. He would act out. He is currently a sophomore in high school. I remember going over to his house once and praying with his mom for some issues she was going through.

I honestly had forgotten about him after our family moved away. Until I went home the first time from college.

My mom started talking about him and how the kid had completely changed. His family had changed. He was in church, active in the youth group and being a witness to the kids around him. I almost started crying. I realized why I am called to youth ministry.

He now texts me every now and then. We talk about his life and what’s going on. He told me that kids at school had been making fun of him and starting rumors about him. I encouraged him to stay strong and told him to walk in love, you know what his response was?… ‘I am walking in love and I felt lead to pray with him on the phone.’ He prayed with the kid who had been talking bad about him.

Just to know that I know a teen that brave! Makes me happy. Makes it worth it!

When I start thinking about it though I start thinking about the call of God on my life. Why does it seem so slow? Why am I not in this position? Why am I still in Tulsa? But when I look at ‘my kids’, the youth kids I have a relationship with, I know this is why I am called to this. The thought of not doing what God wants me to do is saddening. Why would I ever walk away??

Tell me about you experience. With life. Ministry. Or seeing someone’s life changed.

  1. That is such an awesome example of doing what we have to do “at this moment” rather than what we’d “like to do” at this moment. And remembering that God sees the big picture and knows the steps we are to take. It’s so easy to focus on the things that aren’t where “we’d like them to be” and miss the moments when we “get that text”. Thanks for sharing this!!
